Spill Seekers: Clever Ways to Remove Your Red Wine Oops

The dreaded red wine spill—we’ve all been there. From colossal cab sauv spills to major merlot mishaps, there’s no greater wardrobe malfunction than a giant wine stain on your favorite white dress. While stain removers and cleaners can work wonders, they’re not always available when a vino emergency strikes. Instead, try out these clever tricks using everyday (and unexpected) items to rewind your red wine oops.

Rub Salt on the (Wine) Wound
This handy mineral—found in pretty much every restaurant and personal pantry—comes to the rescue for wine spills that are still wet. To remove the spillage, cover the spot completely and let sit for about an hour. The salt should absorb the wine (if the fabric has yet to soak up the spill), which you can then brush off.

Kitty Litter? Works Purrfectly
Believe it or not, clean kitty litter can prevent a red wine cat-tastrophe (yes, we went there). Just sprinkle about a half-inch layer of this highly absorbent material over the stain, then gently press down on the litter to help soak up the liquid. Once you’re done, simply vacuum it up. Similar to salt, this method works best when the wine spill is still wet.

The White Knight: White Wine & Baking Soda
This wine-on-wine method calls for white wine and baking soda to remove the stain. First, soak the item in white wine. Then, create a baking soda paste by mixing three parts baking soda with one part water. Spread the mixture on the stain and let sit for about an hour, then wash as normal. A word to the wise: while some people swear that white wine will dilute the stain, others claim it makes the stain worse. If you’re wary, swap the white wine for water instead.
