White Wine Chills Out with These Serving Tips

Exotic vacations, five-star cuisines, pulse-racing romance—some things are best served hot. White wine, however scintillating our Ménage à Trois varietals may be, is not one of them. To quickly cool off your Chardonnay or lower the temps on a Sauvignon Blanc, follow these tips before you sip for a speedy cool down.

Coddle Your Bottle
Wrap your varietal in a damp towel, then place in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes. The wetness from the towel will help cool down the bottle at a faster pace.

Drop In Frozen Grapes
Use frozen grapes in place of ice cubes to quickly cool off your glass without diluting the wine.

Dip Into an Ice Bath
Place your wine bottle in an ice bucket with ice water and a pinch of salt. The salt lowers the freezing temperature of the water, enabling the ice to cool off the water (and thus, your wine) at a quicker rate.

Temperature Tips
If you have more time to turn down the temps, follow this standard for white wine chilling: High acid wines should be stored at about 45 degrees, while rich whites should be stored closer to 50 degrees. If the temperature is too cold, the flavors will be suppressed. If it’s too warm, the acidity and minerals of the wine won’t be properly expressed.
